Publishers' Original Binding
First published in 1847, the year prior to Ruxton's death. He died in Missouri in 1848, prior to which he had been bedridden from a fall that occurred in the Rocky Mountains.
After resigning his post in the British Army, Ruxton travelled through Mexico to the Rocky Mountains, and the Great Plains, providing a view of the westward expansion of the United States in the 1840s, during the period when the country's government was pursuing its policy of manifest destiny.
