The first U.S. edition of this work.

McClintock's detailed account of the discovery of the fate of Sir John Franklin's ill-fated lost expedition. Franklin set sail in 1845 on a Royal Navy commanded voyage, intending to be the first to sail the Northwest Passage. McClintock explored John Rae's report on Inuit sources of the fate of Franklin, confirming Rae's controversial report.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, one folding map, and twelve plates and maps. 

Collated, bound without front endpaper, though all plates are present.

Written by Leopold McClintock, an Irish explorer of the British Royal Navy. He is best known for his discoveries in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.

The sample of chapters XVII-XX of 'Godfrey's Narrative' is bound to the rear, illustrated with a frontispiece, five plates, an din-text illustrations.

Two pages of publisher's adverts to the front, nine pages of publisher's adverts to the rear.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, with some loss of cloth to the joints, head and tail of the spine, and extremities. A little discolouration and marking to the boards and spine. Bound without front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some spotting.
