11 Volumes of The Cornhill Magazine, dating from January 1860 to December 1965. This collection is comprised of volumes I-IV and VI-XII (missing volume V). The Cornhill magazine was a monthly literary journal containing articles on a diverse range of subjects, as well as poems and serialised novels. Although issues continued to be published until 1975, the magazine reached the peak of its popularity under the editorship of William Makepeace Thackeray between 1860 and 1870. This collection contains novels such as Anthony Trollope's Framley Personage, Armadale by Wilkie Collins, William Thackeray's Denis Duval, and the first appearance of George Eliot's popular story, Romola. As well as Thackeray's Roudabout papers, the volumes also contain poetry by Charlotte Bronte, Alfred Tennyson, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Each volume is illustrated with between 12 and 24 plates, and volumes I, III, IV, and VI contain folding maps or folding plates. All volumes are complete, although some plates appear on different pages than listed. In volume I, the plate called for at page 194 is on page 197, and the plate listed at page 233 is on page 247. In volume II, the plate called for page 13 is the frontispiece, the illustration called for at page 272 can be found at page 252, and the plate called for at 472 can be found at 462. In volume VII, the plate listed at page 207 can be found at page 202. Chip in page 385 in volume II. Condition
In a half calf binding over marbled boards. Externally sound with some light rubbing to the boards and some scuffing to the leather at the spine. There are small closed tears the head of the spine of volume IV, the front joint of volume XIII is tender so some of the leather flaps at the head, and there is also some loss of leather to the head of volume XII. Front joint starting in volumes II and VII, and rear joints starting in volumes I and VI. The front hinge is starting in volume XII, and the rear hinges of volumes X and XI are also starting. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with some occasional spotting, particularly at the plates.
