With engraved frontispiece and additional engraved title page to each volume as well as twenty-eight further plates, including views, portraits, facsimiles, &c. Some folding. Complete with half titles.

Including 'A Journal of his Tour to the Hebrides, Tour in Wales, Correspondence with Mrs Thrale, &c.' With additions and notes by the Right Hon J Wilson Croker, revised and enlarged under his direction by John Wright. 

Samuel Johnson was an English author, well-known in the literary world for his many lasting contributions to various areas of humanist art, including poetry, essay-writing, biography, and more. He is described by the 'Oxford Dictionary of National Biographies' as the most distinguished man of letters in English history. 

This biography is notable for its extensive reports of Johnson's conversation, compiled through Boswell's acquaintance of Johnson since 1763. Originally published in 1791.

Condition

In the original publisher's uniform full cloth binding with decorative embossing to boards and spine, gilt lettering to spine. Externally with light bumping to head and tail of spine and extremities, back strip faded, damp marking to boards. Bookseller embossed stamp to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Odd light spotting to occasional leaf, pages otherwise generally bright and clean.
