Written by George Lillie Craik (1798-1866), a Scottish writer and literary critic. His other works included 'The Pursuit of Knowledge under Difficulties', 'History of English Literature and the English Language', as well as books of Francis Bacon and Edmund Spenser.

A second edition, revised and improved.

Condition

In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart, with the front joint starting; otherwise, a little general wear. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown, with a rubbed out ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Internally, both hinges are strained and exposed but still firm. Pages are generally bright and clean, with just the odd spot.
