Description

Original Binding

The sixth edition of the novel, published the same year as the first. With sixteen pages of Publisher's adverts to the rear of volume II as called for. In the original burnt orange binding. Bound by Edmonds and Remnant, with their binder's stamp to the rear pastedown of both volumes. Adam Bede was published under Mary Ann Evans' pen-name 'George Eliot' despite her reputation as a well-published and highly respected scholar. The novel was her first to be published and has remained in print ever since its first publication.

Condition

In the original burnt orange cloth bindings. Externally, rubbed and bumped to the spines and extremities. A few spots to the front board of volume I. Split to the cloth at rear joint to volume II resulting in joint starting. Front hinge to volume I is weak and may fail with further handling. Rear joint is strained but firm. Front hinge to volume II is tender. Internally, binding to volume I is weak and has near-failed in several places. Several gatherings are only held by a single cord only and may detach with further handling. Volume II binding is strained but generally firm. Pages are generally bright with light scattered spotting.
