The two volume first edition of this medical and biological study from English philosopher, critic and amateur physiologist George Henry Lewes.

Containing expositions of popular medical theories, and evidence from the author's own scientific researches, these volumes include chapters on numerous aspects of human health and physiology, featuring discussions of digestion, respiration, circulation, sleep, dreams and the brain.

A well-known Victorian era populariser of philosophy, Lewes is now best known for having openly lived and maintained a relationship with George Eliot, though they never married.

With the contemporary inscription of John Ford, 1861, to the title page of each volume.

Condition

In half calf bindings, with cloth covered boards. Light fading to back strips, with minor rubbing to back strip heads and tails. Light bumping to board perimeters. Internally, firmly bound. Contemporary owner's inscription to head of title pages. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
