Elisha Kent Kane served as assistant surgeon during Caleb Cushing's journey to China to negotiate the Treaty of Wangxia, was senior medical officer in the First Grinnell expedition to rescue Sir John Franklin, and led the Second Grinnell expedition.
His explorations of the Arctic went further North than any expedition at the time, and led to the eventual path to the North Pole taken by subsequent explorers.
With a former owner's inscription to a front blank.
Condition
In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Gilt detailing to back strip. A touch of rubbing to board perimeters, otherwise externally excellent. Inscription to a front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Spotting and instances of foxing to plates.
