The second edition of this work. Complete in two volumes. 'The Romany Rye' is a semi-autobiographical novel following the journey of a young man who goes to live with Romanies. The work is a sequel of 'Lavengro', which is about a young man who moves to London and becomes associated with the London low-life. Eventually he takes to the road, where he meets Romany travellers. George Borrow was a travel writer, best known for his works about his time with the English Romanichal. He includes, in 'Zincali' a helpful glossary of Romani terms. With eight pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of Volume II.
In the original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Some loss and surface cracks to the spine labels. A little cockling to the spine of Volume I. Minor marks to the boards, heavier to the boards of Volume II. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd scattered spot.
