Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding

The first edition of this historical novel from William Makepeace Thackery. Issued in twenty-four monthly parts by the publisher, front and rear wraps of twenty-two issues are bound in to the rear of these volumes.

With the front and rear wraps of numbers 2-8 and 10-12 bound to the rear of volume I, and with the wraps of issues 13-24 to the rear of volume II. Lacking the wraps of issues two and nine.

The first issue, with the following issue points: 'actresses' on page 207, line 33, Volume I; Chapters 47 and 48 are misnumbered as 48 and 49 in Volume I.

This work is illustrated by Thackery himself, with a number of vignette illustrations, twenty-three plates to volume I, twenty-three plates to volume II, and an illustrated title page to each volume. With further vignette illustrations.

Collated, complete.

Critical reception of the book was on the whole largely favourable, and the novel has continued to be considered a standard work of nineteenth century fiction, though many critics have held that the novel's plotting was not one of the works strong points.

With the bookplate of W. H. Lever to each front pastedown, the bookplate of Sir W. Hesketh Lever to each front free endpaper, and the bookplate of Baron Leverhulme to the verso of each front free endpaper.
