Lord Cardigan sued the author for his eyewitness account of the Charge of the Light Brigade detailed in this work, but the action failed.
Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, and three folding plans.
Bookplate of Clonbrock to the verso of the front free endpaper of Volume I, and to the front paste down of Volume II. Robert Dillon, the 3rd Baron Clonbrock, was a cricket player for the Marylebone Cricket Club, playing in five first class cricket matches between 1832 and 1834.
Handwritten essays tipped in to the rear of Volume I, discussing the state of the British men in the East. The essay ends 'subscriptions will be received by Lady Ashtown, Ventor'.
Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Cracks to the head of the rear joints. Some light marks to the boards and spines, a little heavier to the front boards. A small amount of loss of cloth to the tail of the spine of Volume I. Front hinge of Volume I and the rear hinge of Volume II are starting but firm, rear hinge of Volume I is strained but remains firm. Bookplate to the verso of the front free endpaper of Volume I and to the front paste down of Volume II. Bookseller's label to the rear paste down of Volume I. Handwritten essay tipped into the verso of the rear endpaper of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with some scattered spots to the first and last few pages. Prior owner's pencil notes to the recto of the frontispiece.
