Description

Folding Maps, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

A later impression of this fascinating travel work, exploring Mayan culture in Yucatan, originally published in 1843. Complete in two volumes.

John Lloyd Stephens account of travels in Yucatan to investigate Mayan ruins, visiting numerous sites including Mayapan, Uxmal, Kabah, the gateway at Labná, Sayil, Xtampak, Chichen Itza, Tulum, and Izamal.

These accounts are accompanied with lovely engravings and lithographs by F. Catherwood, illustrating Mayan highly artistic and intellectual works. The evidence was that Mayas produced works of artistic refinement (i.e. stone and plaster sculptures, frescoes, painted pottery) along with large constructions, which led the author to believe Mayans built the ancient Central American cities.

Illustrated with a folding frontispiece to each volume, a folding map to vol. I, and one hundred and twenty engravings, of which seventy-two are full page. Collated, complete with plate 'A Lonely Edifice' to vol. II facing p. 416 instead of 408.

John Lloyd Stephens was an American explorer, pivotal figure in the rediscovery of Mayan civilisation throughout Middle America.
