Written by Charles Johnson, former botanical lecturer at Guy's Hospital.
Including twenty-eight coloured plates, transferred from the original plates of 'English Botany' by James Edward Smith and James Sowerby.
'English Botany' was a major publication of British plants comprising a 36 volume set, issued in 267 monthly parts over 23 years from 1790 to 1814. The work was conceived, illustrated, edited and published by the botanical illustrator and natural historian, James Sowerby.
Containing ink inscriptions from previous owners to the front free-endpaper: 'Henry Evans, to his niece Mary Evans, July 14 1856' and 'Peter Evans, August 1952, Birmingham'.
Condition
In the original cloth binding. Externally, bumping to head and tail of spine and extremities. Some loss to the cloth binding on the spine, particularly to the head. Previous owner's inscription to the front free-endpaper. Internally, front hinge is tender but firm. Pages firmly bound and generally bright and clean.
