Description

Complete in twenty-five novels.

The 'Waverley' novels by Sir Walter Scott were some of the most popular and widely read novels of the time when they were published, increasing Scott's reputation to become one of the most recognisable literary names of the Georgian era. 'Waverley', the first novel in the series, was Scott's first adventure into historical literature, and has been widely acknowledged as one of the first pieces of historical fiction. The novels are set over a period of a eight hundred years, from 1097 with 'Count Robert of Paris' to the 19th century with 'St. Ronan's Well'.

Volume I 'Waverley', Volume II 'Guy Mannering', Volume III 'The Antiquary', Volume IV 'Rob Roy', Volume V 'Old Morality', Volume VI 'The Black Dwarf and a Legend of Montrose', Volume VII 'Heart of Mid-Lothian', Volume VIII 'The Bride of Lammermoor', Volume IX 'Ivanhoe', Volume X 'The Monastery', Volume XI 'The Abbot', Volume XII 'Kenilworth', Volume XIII 'The Pirate', Volume XIV 'Fortunes of Nigel', Volume XV 'Peveril of the Peak', Volume XVI 'Quentin Durward', Volume XVII 'St. Ronan's Well', Volume XVIII 'Redgauntlet', Volume XIX 'The Betrothed and the Highland Widow', Volume XX 'The Talisman, The Two Drovers, My Aunt's Margaret's Mirror, The Tapestried Chamber, and Death of the Laird's Jock', Volume XXI 'Woodstock', Volume XXII 'Fair Maid of Perth', Volume XXIII 'Anne of Geierstein', Volume XXIV 'Count Robert of Paris', and Volume XXV 'The Surgeon's Daughter and Castle Dangerous'.

'Waverley' illustrated with a frontispiece and engraved title page, every other volume illustrated with an engraved title page.

Half-title present to each volume.

Engraved title pages of Volumes III, IV, V, and X state 'Robert Cadell' as the publisher.

Sir Walter Scott is best known today for his novels and poetry, including 'Ivanhoe' and 'The Lady of the Lake'. He wrote a lot about his birthplace of Scotland, though with his experiments in historical fiction, he expanded to writing about various places in England and Europe.

Condition

In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Spines and joints are faded. Light bumping to the extremities. Rubbing to the boards and spines, resulting in a small amount of loss of leather to the rear board of 'Guy Mannering', a little loss of paper to the rear board of Volume XIX, and to the front board of Volume XXI. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd scattered spot, mostly to the first and last few pages.
