Numerous illustrated plates in the 1856 edition with illustration throughout both editions. The volumes include a wide range of articles, from fictional short stories to the state of politics with biographies and philosophical thought. Samuel Johnson's first regular employment as a writer was with The Gentleman's Magazine. Founded in 1731, it was published to inform businessmen and traders of the day on home and foreign affairs. It covered reports of bankruptcies, of ships lost, share prices, deaths and gardening as well cultural matters such as poetry and new books published. As the years went by the magazine was illustrated with engravings of battlegrounds, ancient monuments, new engineering or building works and other items of interest or of newly discovered parts of the earth.
Condition
In a reverse calf binding and 1871 edition in cloth binding. Externally, a trifle rubbed with dampstaining to boards of 1871 edition and marks to boards of 1856 edition. Head and tail of spine and corners bumped with some loss to backstrip of 1856 edition. Boards of 1856 edition held by cords only and front joint starting but firm on later edition. Ink inscription to front free end paper of 1856 edition. Internally, generally firmly bound, though loosening in places. Pages are generally bright and clean.
