The fourth edition of this work in a half calf binding, signed by Gray Cambridge to the front paste down. Ink inscription to the front paste down, dated 1889. 12 plates, including the frontispiece. Illustrations by William Harvey (1796-1866). Collated complete. Captain Thomas Mayne Reid (1818-1883) wrote adventure novels set mainly in the American West, Mexico, South Africa, the Himalayas, and Jamaica. His many works on American life describe colonial policy in the American colonies, the horrors of slave labour and the lives of American Indians. In this novel he describes the adventures of three boys while searching for white buffalo on the American prairie.
Condition
In a half calf binding. Externally very smart, with a little wear to the extremities and the front joint. Minor bumping to both boards. Both joints starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound, though page 133/134 is coming loose. Pages are generally clean, with the odd spot and handling mark throughout, with more spotting to the first few pages. Tidemarks to the plates, not affecting the illustrations, and a closed tear to page 135.
