A new edition of this successful work by Robert Burton published under pseudonym of Democritus Junior and Democritus Minor. Corrected and enriched by translation of the numerous classical extracts. Including an account of the author. First published in 1621 and republished numerous times in later years, this unique philosophical attempts to tackle the subject of melancholy disguising itself as a medical textbook, written in a scholastic manner. 

A unique work of literature which uses melancholy as a means to analyse all human emotions, forming an encyclopaedic text. Including a satirical preface by the author. 

Featuring an engraved frontispiece and additional engraved title page.

Condition

In a full diced calf binding with marbled edges and endpapers. Externally generally sound with some shelf wear and rubbing to the spine and boards and along the joints. Considerable fading to the spine, which has lost its gilt. Back-strip now laid down. Ownership inscription to a front blank page, dated 1903. Inscribed by a previous owner to the verso front free endpaper with Robert Herrick's poem 'The Bellman', dated 1940. Frontispiece and front blank page loose but present; Otherwise, internally the binding is tight, cockling the occasional inner gutters slightly. Light spotting tot he first and last few leaves only, otherwise the pages are generally very clean throughout. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and additional engraved title page.
