The scarce 1855 edition of this work, with numerous illustrated vignette woodcuts and two full plate illustrations.
Based partly upon Maria Rundell's hugely successful 1805 'A New System of Domestic Cookery'. Following a court case, publisher John Murray bought the rights the work from Rundell in 1823, and published numerous further expanded edition, of which this is one.
A dominant cookery book of the period, there were sixty-seven editions published between 1806 and 1846 alone, and numerous others followed.
With a thirty two page publisher's catalogue to the rear, and further advertisements to front and rear free endpapers and pastedowns.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Some marks to boards, with small split in cloth to head of front joint. Bumping to spine head and tail. Front and rear hinges weak but holding. Internally, firmly bound. Spotting to first few pages, but otherwise generally clean.
