1856 Volume illustrated with sixty-three folding plates and maps, and four plates. Collated, complete.

Two volumes of Alexander Dallas Bache's immense and detailed reports on the coast of America, these two volumes being reports for the years 1855 and 1856.

The reports details the progress made by the Coast Survey Office during the year, with many reports of topographical surveys on various places along the U. S. coast.

Offering a good insight into the development of America's coast on the eve of the Civil War.

Alexander Dallas Bache started his career as an army engineer, before becoming the Superintendent of the U. S. Coast Survey from 1843 to 1867.

With Bache's help the U.S. Coast Survey became the foremost scientific institution in the U.S. before the Civil War.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding, rebacked with the original boards and spines restored. Externally, smart. Light marks and discolouration to the boards and spines. A little wear to the joints and spine of 1856, evidence of former loss to each volume before rebacking. Light rubbing to the boards and spines. Minor bumping to the extremities. Presentation label to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some spots. Small tear to the title page of 1855. Some light edgewear and closed tears to the folds of some plates, including plates 3 and 15 to 1855 and plate 2 to 1856. Plate 36 of 1856 is detached but present.
