Published anonymously, as 'by the author of 'Amy Herbert', 'The Experience of Life', etc. 

Complete in two volumes. 

Elizabeth Missing Sewell was an English author of religious and educational works. She devised a set of influential principles of education. 

This story is based on circumstances of real life but is a fictional moral tale about the questions "as to the best mode of meeting the necessities of the poor, and the various needs of our complex state of society," which the author disclaims in the preface. 

Prior owner's book plates to the first pastedowns. From the library of R. L. Watson. 

Condition

In half calf bindings and marbled boards. There is some rubbing to the heads and tails of the spines and to the extremities. The boards are slightly worn. The front hinge of Volume I is starting to crack, and there is some slight loss to the title label on the spine. Prior owner's book plates to the first pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with the odd spot and age toning.
