Illustrated, Leather Binding

With a frontispiece, colour plates and engravings throughout by John Leech. Robert Smith Surtees was a novelist and editor, born in 1805. He began contributing to the New Sporting Magazine in 1831, and it was here that his comic character Jorrocks first appeared. The cockney grocer would later become the focus of several novels. As with many of Surtees novels, this volume include several illustrations by the popular artist John Leech. Leech is best known for his contributions to the famous 'Punch' magazine, and was one of the leading caricaturist and illustrators of the 19th century.

Condition

In a half calf binding. Externally, sound. Rubbing and wear to the head and tail of the spine, raised bands, joints and extremities. Rubbing has resulted in a some loss to the leather. Cracks to the joints. The front and rear hinges are strained. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are somewhat age-toned and are lightly spotted throughout.
