A very scarce copy of the first English edition, translated from the French of M Armengaud Ainé, MM Armengaud, Jeune, and Amuroux, published in 1848. Rewritten and arranged, with additional matter and plates, selections from and examples of the most useful and generally employed mechanism of the day, by William Johnson. 

A remarkable volume of industrial design and technology, providing a study of mechanical, engineering, and architectural drawing. This work paved the way for a big expansion in the field drawing education in France, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Illustrated with fifty-five full page plates, of which two are in colour, some folding. Collated, complete.

Condition

In a half calf binding over cloth covered boards. Externally sound with some shelf wear and minor rubbing to the leather, with a minor chipping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, and some minor sunning to the boards. The endpapers and blank pages are creased vertically. With T Knight's stamp to the front blank page. Internally, firmly bound. With the occasional minor odd spotting to the odd leaf, otherwise the pages are generally bright and clean throughout. Illustrated with fifty-five full page plates, of which two are in colour, some folding. Collated, complete.
