Thus is French chef Alexis Benoît Soyer's history of food and its preparation, 'from the earliest ages of the world'. During his lifetime, Soyer was the most celebrated cook in Victorian England and was in charge of the kitchens at the Reform Club.
With a signed letter from the author to Thomas Babington Macauley to the front endpaper.
The letter, dated October 12th 1853, reads as follows: ' Dear Sir, I shall esteem it a particular favour by allowing my Pantropheon to fill a corner in your private library - with many thanks, I have the honor to remain, your most obed. servant, A. Soyer'.
A British historian and Whig politician. He wrote extensively as an essayist on contemporary and historical socio-political subjects, and as a reviewer.

Rebacked, with original cloth binding restored. Cloth worn. Letter to front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Plates retain their original tissue guards.
