What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, First Edition, Leather Binding

Two mid-nineteenth century works of American anti-slavery literature bound together in half calf.

The first of these two works is the 1852 Routledge 'Author's Unabridged Edition' of Stowe's work, published in the same year as the first edition. This is one of a significant number of London editions to appear in the same year, with the chronological order of these editions remaining uncertain to this day.

The second of these works is the 1952 'First English Edition' of the revised and enlarged edition of American journalist and historian Richard Hildreth's anti-slavery novel.

First published in 1836 as 'The Slave: or Memoir of Archy Moore', it was revised and enlarged to coincide with - and capitalise upon - the publication of Stowe's novel.

With a contemporary owner's inscription to the head of 'Uncle Tom' title page, and with the 1909 inscription of Maurice Vaile, and the 1942 inscription of Joan Wilson, to the front free endpaper.

A smart volume presenting two popular works of mid-nineteenth century American fiction.
