'The History of Henry Esmond' tells the story of the early life of the eponymous character, who was a colonel for Queen Anne, during the time of the English Restoration. This was a popular example of Victorian historical fiction.
There was a sequel published in 1859 called 'The Virginians'.
William Makepeace Thackeray is best known for his satirical works looking at English society, most especially for 'Vanity Fair'. He tended to be quite savage in his attacks on society, publishing under various pseudonyms in his youth to avoid personal criticism.
