First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding
Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was an American novelist and short story writer; his works often contained themes such as morality and religion, and include 'The Scarlet Letter' and 'Twice Told Tales' as well as 'The Blithedale Romance', which was his third 'romance', set on a utopian farming commune based on Brook Farm, a commune founded by and lived upon by Hawthorne. The commune was idealised by many Transcendentalists, interesting the likes of Ralph Waldo Emerson. This is a first edition in the original first issue binding, with issue point that the 'O' in the 'Co' of 'Ticknor and Co.' on the base of the spine is a capital letter. Bound with twelve pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original binding with a blind stamped decorative emblem to the boards. Contains a bookplate denoting that it is from the library of Frederick B. Adams Jr, an American bibliophile who directed the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York between 1948 and 1969. his bookplate was designed by Rockwell Kent (1882-1981), a renowned painter and printmaker.
Condition
In a full cloth binding. Externally generally smart, some bumping to the head of the spine and extremities. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally firmly bound, pages bright and clean.
