What Our Customers Say...
Description
An Important Work, First Edition, Illustrated, Original Binding, Very Scarce
Illustrated with forty-two plates across all parts, including the vignette title page and frontispiece. Illustrations are by noted Victorian artist, Hablot Knight Browne or 'Phiz'. Phiz frequently illustrated works by Charles Dickes, Charles Lever and Harrison Ainsworth. The first edition of this novel in printed form. It had previously been serialised in 'Sharpe's London Magazine'. Vanishingly scarce to find all twenty-one parts in the original wraps, particularly in this condition. Written by Francis Edward Smedley, an English novelist and noted periodical contributor. He is probably best known for his novel 'Harry Coverdale's Courtship'. Collated, complete. Several parts remain uncut to the top edge. Held in a clamshell box by Zaehnsdorf of London. All volumes have been professionally rebacked with tape. A scarce opportunity to own this novel in its original parts, in the original blue wrappers.
Condition
In the publisher's original wraps and held in a clamshell box. All parts have been rebacked with the original wraps preserved. Externally, very smart. Slight browning to the front wrap of part 20 & 21. Minor creasing to the wrap edges and the odd mark. Contemporary inscription to front wrap of part 5. Internally, all parts are firmly bound. Pages are bright. Several parts remain uncut to the top edge. Just the occasional light spots.
