This autobiographical work was written by Francis Bond Head and provides an account of his time in Paris in 1851. During his stay, he avoided the recommendations he had received from acquaintances of things to do in the city, and decided instead on entertaining himself as a true Parisian. He never went to the theatre, and only when into a café once, as well as avoiding receiving or paying visits. In these two volumes, Head notes the life of the poor in Paris, various streets and gardens, the railway, the post-office, his lodgings, washing-boats, and prisons. It is a fascinating snapshot of life in the heart of France in the mid-nineteenth century.
