Edited from the original MSS. at Wotton by William Bray, esq. F.A.S. A new edition, in four volumes. Corrected, revised and enlarged. With frontispiece portraits of John Evelyn and his wife, Mary Evelyn, to volumes one and two, respectively. Includes illustrative plate of Evelyn's seat at Wotton, Surrey and a folding genealogy of his family. Volumes one and two comprise the Diary of John Evelyn, volume three the Correspondence of John Evelyn, and volume four the Letters of Mrs. Evelyn with her character, by Dr. Bohun, and the aforementioned private correspondence. John Evelyn (1620 - 1706) was a noted English diarist and horticulturalist. An accomplished scholar with wide-ranging interests, John Evelyn was an influential figure in an age of particular cultural and scientific progress. His memoirs and letters give a fascinating portrait of life amongst seventeenth century intellectuals and the Restoration Court of Charles II.
Condition
Rebound in quarter cloth with decorative paper-covered boards and printed paper labels to spines. Externally very smart, with minor shelfwear only. Personal binders label to front pastedown of all volumes. Small closed tears to first two pages of volume one. Internally, generally firmly bound. Light foxing throughout volumes one and two. Volumes three and four foxed to first and last few pages, otherwise pages clean except for the occasional handling mark.
