First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding

In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Comprising of two volumes bound as one. 'The Magazine of Art' began as a journal dedicated to the 1851 Great Exhibition. It then evolved into these two volumes, which was a weekly devoted to the arts, educational in purpose to spread culture. It ran under the title of 'The Illustrated Exhibitor and Magazine of Art' until 1853 when it suspended printing due to a dwindling in popularity. However, Cassell re-launched the magazine in 1878 and ran successfully until 1904. With a folding plate to page 337 of volume II, 'The Funeral Procession of the Late Duke Wellington'. A beautifully illustrated work, which demonstrates the development in the visual arts and technology in the Victorian Era.

Condition

In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. Light patches of rubbing and a few light marks to the boards. Spine has faded and has several light patches of rubbing. Head of spine is lifting slightly at the rear joint. Prior owner's inscription to the front pastedown, Michael Gardiner New Hildon 1853'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd spots.
