Description

Illustrated, Original Binding, Scarce

A two volume encyclopaedia of architectural terms, with volume I concerned with the letters A-H, and volume II with I-Z. With frequent full plate illustrations throughout both volumes. Volume II lacks three plates, which are supplied in facsimile photocopies.

The work of Peter Nicholson, a Scottish architect, mathematician and engineer, now best remembered for his theoretical work on arches, and his invention of draughtsman's instruments still in use to this day. This work was originally published under the title 'The Architectural Dictionary' in two volumes between 1812 and 1819.

Following Nicholson's death in 1844, Edward Lomax and Thomas Gunyon heavily revised, expanded and edited his earlier work.

Condition

In the original cloth binding. Bumping to extremities and spine head and tail. Light fading to perimeters and spine. Pencil marks to front pastedown of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright, with scattered marks throughout. Volume II lacks three plates, which are supplied in facsimile.
