Complete with two volumes bound as one. 'The History of Henry Esmond' tells the story of the eponymous character, who was a colonel for Queen Anne, during the time of the English Restoration. There was a sequel published in 1859 called 'The Virginians'. William Thackeray is best know for his satirical works looking at English society, most especially for 'Vanity Fair'. He tended to be quite savage in his attacks on society, publishing under various pseudonyms in his youth to avoid personal criticism.
Condition
In the original half crushed morocco with marble paper boards. Externally, smart. Rubbing has caused a little discolouration to the paper boards.Rubbing has caused minor loss to the spine, mostly to the head and spine, and o the joints and extremities. Front hinge is starting but remains firm. Very minor offsetting to the recto of the front endpaper, and to the verso of the rear endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with a touch of age toning to the edges, and generally clean. The odd scattered spot throughout. Tidemarks throughout the text block, mostly to the tail of pages close to the binding, and to the head of pages. Tail of page 253/254 is untrimmed, resulting in it being slightly longer.
