1851 The Crystal Palace: Its Architectural History and Constructive Marvels
What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Folding Plates, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce
The first edition of this very scarce work, published in the year of the Exhibition. Authored by Peter Berlyn and Charles Fowler. A noted architect, Fowler is best remembered for his designs of markets, including London's Covent Garden Market.
Collated, illustrated with a folding frontispiece, and fourteen further plates - each retaining tissue guards - and an engraved plate advertising the publisher. Lacking one plate only, 'Hoisting the Ribs for the Transept Roof', which should appear facing page 75.
This work is unique in illustrating and describing all of the machines used in making the parts for the Palace; it also lists all of the competitors for the building design and illustrates and describes two of the competing designs.
With a presentation bookplate to the front pastedown, dedicating the work to 'John Bowden for his regular attendance as a teacher in the Maple Church Sunday School'. Bookseller's blind stamp to front free endpaper.
With sixteen pages of advertisements to the rear.
A very scarce and wonderfully detailed contemporary insight into the Crystal Palace.
