The second volume only of Albert Henry Payne's very scarce two volume work examining the grand cities of Europe. This second volume examines the war and revolution that took hold of Europe in the first half of the nineteenth century.

The preface explains that this volume aims 'to place the various scenes of this great drama vividly before the reader, by a combined means of profuse pictorial illustration, and of clear and succinct written description of the events, in the order in which they occurred'.

Illustrated with an steel engraved frontispiece and title page, twenty-three further engraved plates, and ten folding maps. Each map and plate depicts a European city or country.

These engravings are the work of English born, Leipzig based steel engraver, painter and illustrator Albert Henry Payne.

With the bookplate of Alan Maxcey Galer to the front pastedown.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Areas of fading and discolouration to boards. Hinges strained, with boards holding firm. Bookplate to front pastedown. Frontispiece detached but present. Internally, firmly bound. Instances of spotting and handling marks throughout. Three folding maps loosely inserted to rear.
