'Lights and Shades of Military Life' is a work of military memoir which can be broken down into two different volumes. The first portion of the work is taken from Count de Vigny's production of the historical 'Cinq-Mars novel', as well as other works of military fiction, while the latter part is taken from a publication by M. Elzear Blaze, a French captain in Napoleon's army. The editor, Lieutenant-General Sir Charles J. Napier, adds his own thoughts and life experiences through 'Editor's Remarks' throughout the work.
Contents fall under 'Recollections of Military Servitude', 'Recollections of Military Greatness', and 'Military Life in Bivouac, Camp, Garrison, Barracks, &c.'
