The very scarce first edition of this collection of plates illustrating the discoveries of ancient Assyrian cities made by Paul-Emile Botta in the Ottoman Empire, modern day Iraq.

Discovered by Botta in 1842, Nineveh would for a time have been the largest city in the world. This work contains translations of Botta's letters upon his discovery, accompanied by plates depicting the sculptures found, and the inscriptions present on ancient Assyrian monuments.

With a folding colour frontispiece, and forty eight further plates, the majority of which are folding. Collated, complete.

Including folding plates displaying ancient Akkadian cuneiform script.

With the former owner's bookplate of Major-Gen. A. A. Munro to the front pastedown.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to board extremities. Front and rear joints strained, with rear board holding firm, and front board only loosely held. Back strip age toned, with losses to cloth at head and tail, and a further small loss to the centre of back strip. Former owner's plate to front pastedown. Bookseller's stamp to front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned due to paper type, most concentrated to page perimeters. The odd small closed tear to fore edge of plates.
