Description

First Edition, Leather Binding

Taking its name from a line in Shakespeare's 'Henry V', Household Words was an English weekly magazine edited by Charles Dickens. It appeared every Saturday between March 1850 until May 1859, with each issue costing a tuppence, making it widely available.

The first edition, first issue.

The periodical comprised both fiction and non-fiction, with the non-fiction writing focused mostly on social injustices of the time. Important works serialised within include 'Hard Times', 'A Child's History of England', Wilkie Collins' 'The Dead Secret', 'Cranford' and 'North and South' by Elizabeth Gaskell.

Complete in the original nineteen volumes; this work is uncommonly found complete and in such smart condition.

Acquired from the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an English socialite and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was featured by Cecil Beaton in 'The Book of Beauty'. Amongst her circle were Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Coco Chanel, Salvador Dali, Winston and Clementine Churchill and Nancy Mitford.

Collated, complete with all four hundred and seventy-nine issues from between March 1850 and May 1859. Volume IV, VI, VIII, X, XII, XIV and XVI are complete with the extra number for Christmas.

A lovely complete collection of this important Victorian periodical.

Condition

In a half crushed morocco binding. Externally very smart, with just occasional rubbing to the spines and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are occasionally a little spotted, in particular to the first and final leaves.
