Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding

The first edition. Complete in two volumes. In the original full cloth, pictorial binding, with the publisher's advertisements to the paste-downs and free endpapers. A fascinating historical work on the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh. Written by Austen Henry Layard, an English Assyriologist, art historian and politician, best known as the excavator of Nineveh. Shortly after the publication of this work, Layard released his popular title, 'The Monuments of Nineveh' , which is a collection of plates to illustrate the expedition. Published in the same year as Layard's popular collection of plates titled, 'The Monuments of Nineveh'. Nineveh was an ancient city in Upper Mesopotamia, located in modern-day Iraq. For many years it was considered the largest city in the world, but was abandoned in the late 13th century. This set comprises of: Volume One - With an engraved frontispiece, eight full-page plates, four folding plates and a large folding map to the rear of the volume. Collated complete. Volume Two - With an engraved frontispiece, ten full page plates, two folding plates, and numerous vignette illustrations. Collated complete. With an ink inscription to the front blanks of both volumes, for one, 'John Winter Jones'. Including a tipped in gift note to the front of volume one. John Winter Jones was the Principal Librarian for the British Museum between 1866 and 1873.
