Complete in one volume. Tobias Smollett was a Scottish poet and author, best known for his Picaresque novels, such as The Adventures of Roderick Random and The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle, which influenced Charles Dickens' work. George Orwell was said to have admired Smollett very much. Illustrated frontispiece portrait of Tobias Smollett by J. Freeman and nineteen illustrated plates by George Cruikshank. Cruikshank was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. Cruikshank also illustrated books for his friend Charles Dickens. Includes a memoir of the author from Thomas Roscoe and a sample of the author's handwriting. Includes twenty of his stories, namely 'Peregrine Pickle', 'Satire Reproof', 'Count Fathom' and many more.
Condition
In a cloth binding. Externally, sound with blindstamped detailing to front and rear boards. Marks to front board and rubbing to corners. Bumping to head and tail of spine. Hinges are strained but firm. Ink inscription on front pastedown and title page. Internally, binding tender in places with foxing to first few pages and spotting to illustrated plates, otherwise pages are bright and clean.
