The first and only edition of this work. Two volumes in one with separate pagination, only one title page and contents list for vol. I only. Both frontispieces present. 

A celebration of technological development in history, with chapters dedicated to the history of important inventions such as the mariner's compass, lighthouses, gunpowder and gun-cotton, clocks, printing, the steam-engine, railway, and much more. Text is adorned with numerous illustrations in text. 

A scarce work, rebound in lovely full calf. From the library of J. Francis Taylor,

Condition

Rebound in full calf with gilt to spine and boards, gilt to edges, renewed endpapers. Externally smart with minor shelf wear, boards lightly marked. J. Francis Taylor's bookplate to front pastedown. Previous ownership pencil inscription to recto frontispiece vol I, dated 1928. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to first and last few leaves, pages otherwise bright and clean.
