Leather Binding, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding
Complete in seven volumes. Originally published between 1702 and 1704, now for the first time carefully printed from the original manuscript preserved in the Bodleian Library. A record of events from 1641 onwards, detailing the rebellion and conflict across England, now regarded as one of the most significant histories of the 1642 to 1646 Civil War. First written as a defence of Charles I, Hyde extensively revised the work following his exile in 1667 and it became far more critical, particularly in its assessments of his contemporaries. Written by Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon, an English statesman, lawyer, diplomat and historian who served as chief advisor to Charles I during the First English Civil War, and Lord Chancellor to Charles II. This study explores the idea that for Parliamentarians, the conflict was an attempt to restore the political balance between king and Parliament disrupted by the 1629 to 1640 Personal Rule, while Royalists considered it an unlawful rebellion against their sovereign. It is highly influenced by Clarendon's politics and subtly supports his own views of Royalist strategy. Like many moderates he felt attempts by Charles I to rule without Parliament had gone too far, but by 1642 felt Parliament's leaders were, in turn, seeking too much power.
