Description

First Edition, Leather Binding, Signed Binding

A bright copy of the first edition of the first published work from English priest, novelist and professor Charles Kingsley, best known for his beloved children's novel, 'The Water-Babies'. In a half calf signed binding by J. Larkins.

A devout Christian, in this verse drama set in the Middle Ages, Kingsley tells the story of the medieval saint Elizabeth of Hungary, with the saint starring as the heroine of his piece.

A lovely first edition copy of this play, thought to have been inspired by a conversation Kingsley had with his wife about 'the sanctity of the marriage-bed'.
