Illustrated with a frontispiece of Fuseli to the beginning of text.

This is an informative work containing lectures on painting carried out by painters James Barry, John Opie, and Henry Fuseli. 

Lecture contents include 'On the History and Progress of the Art', 'On Chiaroscuro', 'Ancient Art', 'On Design', and 'On the present State of the Art, and the Causes which check its progress'.

Edited 'with an introduction and notes critical and illustrative' by Ralph N. Wornum (1812-1877), a British artist, art historian, and administrator. 

Prize bookplate to front paste down awarded to Annie Johnson from the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. 

With an ink inscription to rear endpaper belonging to prior owner Jasper Rose.

Collated, complete.

Bound in a full-crushed morocco prize binding.Externally, smart. Light rubbing to the extremities and the spine, including along the joints. Light fading to spine. Prize bookplate to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Blind prize-stamp to title page.
