With a presentation copy from Halle to Herschel dated 24th June 1848. Stating 'To Sir John Herschel from the author, as a tribute...' With a stamp to the front pastedown from the Collingwood Herschel Library. John Herschel was the son of astronomer William Herschel. He was an English polymath, mathematician, astronomer and chemist remembered for inventing the blueprint. He also originated the use of the Julian day system in astronomy. The first and only edition of this very scarce work. Hughes Fraser Halle wrote several philosophical and critical works. His extensive bibliography includes 'Critical Letters' and essays contributed to the 'Britannic Censor of European Philosophy'. This work touches on modern mythology, useful-knowledge physiology, critical prose fiction and more.

Condition

In the original full cloth binding. Externally, sound with bumping to the extremities. Loss to the head and tail of spine. Light rubbing to the joints and boards. Stamp to the front pastedown for the Herschel Collingwood Library. Presentation inscription from the author to the recto of front endpaper To Sir John Herschel. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd spots.
