The first edition of this beautifully illustrated mid nineteenth century study of the customs and costumes of the Americas. One part only of a five part work. The other parts cover Asia, Africa, Oceania and Europe.
Illustrated with twenty-three hand coloured costume plates, each retaining the original tissue guard, alongside numerous further vignette engravings. Collated, complete.
These exceptionally vibrant plates include numerous depictions of Native American dress, Esquimau clothing, and the national dress of numerous South American countries including Chile and Peru, and the traditional clothing of the city of Bogata.

Condition
In a quarter calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. A touch of rubbing to back strip head and tail, otherwise externally excellent. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with scattered spotting throughout, and plates exceptionally vibrant.
