Decorative Binding, Rebound, Scarce

A scarce edition of the English translation of Heinrich Rose's treatise on chemical analysis. This is the first of two volumes, covering qualitative analysis. Including notes and additions from Alphonse Normandy. Heinrich Rose was a German mineralogist and analytical chemist. His early works on phosphorescence were noted in the Quarterly Journal of Science in 1821, and on the strength of these works, he was elected privatdozent at the University of Berlin from 1822, then Professor from 1832. This copy was bound in decorative cloth by Westley's & Co, and their binding plate can be found on the rear pastedown of the book. This is also an ex-library book, with their plate on the verso of the front free-endpaper: 'Rural History Centre, University of Reading.'

Condition

Bound in cloth by Westley's & Co, with their binding plate to the rear pastedown. Externally, smart with some bumping, especially to the head and tail of the spine and corners. Some marks and discolouration of the boards. Slight discolouration to the front and back pastedowns. Ex-library stamp to the verso of the front free-endpaper. Internally, rear hinge slightly strained but still firm. Internally, binding tender but firm. Pages generally clean, with small amount of discolouration and the odd spot to the first and last few pages.
