Volume three is illustrated with thirty-seven plates. Collated complete.

A detailed work on the foundations of Manchester from the College and Collegiate Church, the Free Grammar School, and Chetham's Hospital.

Volume one contains the history of the College and Collegiate Church of Manchester drawn upon from original or very scarce documents by Samuel Hibbert-Ware, an English antiquarian.

Volume two completes this first part and also contains an architectural description of the Collegiate Church and College of Manchester by John Palmer, an English architect.

Volume three contains the history of Manchester School and a history of the Chetham Hospital and library by William Robert Whatton, a British surgeon and antiquarian.

Volume four contains an essay on the ancient parish church of Manchester and why it was collegiated by Samuel Hibbert-Ware.

Previously held in the library of Thomas Turner, an English surgeon known for his involvement in developing medical education outside of the traditional base of London. He established a medical school in Manchester and was both a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Linnean Society of London.

Condition

In the original brown cloth binding. Externally, worn with shelf wear and rubbing to the extremities resulting in light loss of the cloth. Light fading to the spine with loss to the head and tails. Further loss to the tail of the spine of volume four, with a split in the cloth to the front joint and across the spine of volume two. Front joint starting but firm to volume two. Joints and hinges starting but firm to volume four. The odd mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with scattered spotting. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown.
