Illustrated, Leather Binding

Rebound in a quarter calf binding. This work was written for the author's daughters, advising them on the arrangement of their table, proper economy, and how to avoid all excessive luxury. This work was the most popular English cookbook during the first half of the nineteenth century. It was aimed towards middle class housewives, and includes an early (possibly the first) recipe for tomato sauce, and the first printed recipe for Scotch eggs. Illustrated with a frontispiece, nine plates, and in-text illustrations. Written by Maria Rundell, who is often deemed as being the first domestic goddess. Edited by E. Birch. Prior owner's ink inscription to the reverse of the frontispiece, 'R. Richards, Hull, Sept 1878'. Collated, complete.

Condition

Rebound in a quarter calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. Light marks to the leather. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd spot.
