The second edition of this work. Complete in seven volumes. An additional eighth volume was published later, being an index volume. In the armorial binding of George Savile Foljambe. Foljambe was a first-class English cricketer, playing for Nottinghamshire and Oxford University from 1879 to 1892. He was born at Osberton Hall, near Worksop. He retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel, though he returned to service during the First World War. This work is completely devoted to the Lord Chancellors of England, from the earliest times, up to the reign of King George IV. It has been a highly rated work of biography. The people discussed in this work are Thomas Becket, Thomas Bek, John Langton, Thomas Arundel, George Neville, Thomas Wolsey, Thomas More, Edward Hyde, William Cowper, and more. The Lord Chancellor position is the highest ranking among the Great Officers of State in British politics. The Chancellor is responsible for the functioning and indepence of the courts. Written by John Campbell, the 1st Baron Campbell. Campbell was a Liberal politician, as well as being a man of letters and a lawyer. He also wrote 'Lives of the Chief Justices of England' and 'Shakespeare's Legal Acquirements Reconsidered'. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'G. S. Foljambe, Osberton'.

In a full calf armorial binding. Externally, generally smart. Light fading to the spines. Minor rubbing to the boards and spines. Minor marks to the boards. Some very minor fading to the joints. Bookplate to the front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some spots.
