Admiral John Lort Stokes' fascinating first hand account of the last major expedition to Australia aboard the H.M.S. Beagle from 1837 to 1843. This expedition describes the survey of the coast of Australia in particular, including the Torres and Bass Straits, Adelaide, and the Swan River at Perth. This expedition is particularly known for having Charles Darwin aboard from 1831 to 1836. 

Also including a narrative of Captain Owen Stanley's visits to the Islands in the Arafura Sea. 

The uncommon first edition of this work. 

Complete in two volumes.

Illustrated with twenty-six plates, twenty-eight in-text illustrations, and eight folding charts, six of which are in the rears of the volumes and two of which are bound in. Collated and complete. 

Jorn Lort Stokes was a nineteenth-century Royal Navy officer serving on the H.M.S. Beagle from 1824 to 1841. He rose in ranks from midshipman to commander, and is credited for the scientific names of two species of reptiles: 'astrotia stokesii' and 'egernia stokesii'. 

Numerous newspaper clippings regarding Captain James Cook loosely inserted, including clippings about the death of James Cook, the widow of James Cook (Elizabeth Cook), Professor J.C. Beaglehole, and more. 

Containing two pages of advertisements to the front of Volume I, and eight pages of advertisements to the rear of Volume I. Containing four pages of advertisements to the front of Volume II, eight pages of advertisements to the rear of Volume II.

Contemporary ink initials to the title page in each volume.

Condition

Rebacked in the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, sound, with some shelf wear and bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and extremities. A few marks to the boards, and slight darkening to the spines. Contemporary ink initials to the title page in each volume. A few ink notations to the pastedowns, and a previous bookseller's sticker to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally, front hinges are very lightly strained. Remaining binding is firm. A few spots and handling marks to the first and last few pages, and the odd spot throughout. A few light pencil notations to the pages. Otherwise, pages are generally bright and clean.
